My Money Life

My Money Life: Finance Planner

Personal finance & budget planning made simple

My Money Life is a private, on-device finance app covering Budget, Net Worth, 401(k), IRA, Social Security, 529, and 530A โ€” all in one place. Nothing you enter ever leaves your phone.

Data & Privacy

How is my data stored?
All your financial data is stored locally on your device only. Nothing is sent to any server โ€” your data never leaves your phone.
How do I back up my data?
Go to Settings โ†’ Data โ†’ Export Backup (JSON). The app creates a timestamped file (MyMoneyLife_YYYY-MM-DD.json) and opens the share sheet so you can save it to Files, email it, or send it anywhere.
How do I restore from a backup?
Go to Settings โ†’ Data โ†’ Import Backup (JSON) and select your exported file. The app asks you to confirm before importing โ€” this replaces all current data with the backup. Both current and older backup formats are supported.
I lost my data after reinstalling. Can I recover it?
Data is stored on-device only and cannot be recovered after uninstalling. Export a backup from Settings regularly, especially before switching devices or reinstalling.

Security

How does PIN lock work?
Under Settings โ†’ Security, tap Set PIN to require a 4-digit PIN every time the app opens or returns from the background. The PIN is stored securely in the iOS Keychain.
How do I change or remove my PIN?
Go to Settings โ†’ Security and tap Change PIN or Remove PIN.
I forgot my PIN. What do I do?
Export a backup from Settings first (if you can access it), then delete and reinstall the app. The PIN resets on reinstall. Import your backup afterward to restore your data.
How do I wipe all data?
Go to Settings โ†’ Danger Zone โ†’ Wipe All Data. You must type WIPE (all caps) to confirm. This permanently deletes all planners, snapshots, and settings. Export a backup first.

Planners

What planner types are available?
Seven types: Budget, Net Worth, 401(k), IRA, Social Security, 529, and 530A.
Can I create multiple planners of the same type?
Yes โ€” there's no limit. Tap + on the Planners tab to open Manage Planners, then add as many as you need. For example, you can have a personal budget and a household budget, or a 401(k) for each employer.
How do I rename, duplicate, or delete a planner?
Long-press a planner card for a context menu with Rename, Duplicate, Remove from Grid, and Delete. The same menu is available inside any planner via the โ€ฆ toolbar button.
How do I hide a planner from the grid without deleting it?
Long-press the card and tap Remove from Grid. The planner still exists and its data is preserved โ€” you can re-add it from Manage Planners at any time.
How do I reorder planners?
Tap the reorder button (โ†‘โ†“) on the Planners tab to drag and rearrange. The order also controls the order of sections in the KPI tab.
What are Snapshots?
Snapshots let you save a named, timestamped copy of a planner's current data. Load one to restore that state, or use Edit to update it with new figures. Supported in: Budget, Net Worth, 401(k), IRA, 529, and 530A. Not available in Social Security.

Budget Planner

How does the Budget planner work?
Add income items and expense categories, then view totals in Weekly, Bi-weekly, Monthly, or Annual view. The KPI bar at the top always shows Gross, Take-Home, Expenses, and Surplus (or Deficit).
What's the difference between Expenses and Deductions?
Deductions (like taxes, health insurance, or 401k contributions) come out of gross pay and reduce take-home. Expenses are paid from take-home. Each category is tagged as one or the other when you create it.
Can I set an income item as a percentage instead of a fixed amount?
Yes. Each income item supports Fixed $ amount or % of Gross mode. Expense items also support % of Gross and % of 401k Base.

Net Worth Planner

How does Net Worth tracking work?
Add your assets (cash, investments, real estate, vehicles, etc.) and liabilities (mortgage, auto loans, credit cards, etc.) under their respective categories. The KPI bar shows Net Worth, Total Assets, Total Debt, and Debt Ratio.

401(k) Planner

How does the 401(k) calculator work?
Enter your current age, retire age, balance, salary, contribution %, employer match, return rate, salary growth, and withdrawal preference. The calculator projects your balance through retirement and shows whether you're on track to replace your income.
What is Mega Backdoor Roth?
Mega Backdoor Roth lets high earners make after-tax contributions beyond the standard deferral cap, then convert them to Roth. Toggle it on in the 401(k) calculator to model after-tax contributions, track the 415(c) total limit, and see a pre-tax vs tax-free breakdown in a pie chart.
What are the IRS contribution limits shown in the app?
The app displays 2026 IRS limits. Employee deferral cap: $23,500 (under 50), $31,000 (50โ€“59 and 64+), $34,750 (60โ€“63). 415(c) total limit (with Mega Backdoor): $70,000 / $77,500 / $81,250 based on age.

IRA Planner

How do I choose between Roth and Traditional IRA?
Toggle the Account Type at the top of the IRA planner: Roth (after-tax contributions, tax-free withdrawals) or Traditional (pre-tax contributions, taxable at withdrawal). The projections and labels update instantly.
What is the IRA contribution limit?
The 2026 IRS limit is $7,000/year (under 50) or $8,000/year (50+). The planner shows a contribution bar and flags when you're at or over the cap.

Social Security Planner

How do I use the Social Security estimator?
Choose Salary Estimate (enter your annual salary and the SS wage base) or SSA Statement (enter your PIA directly from your Social Security statement). The planner shows your estimated monthly benefit at every claiming age from 62 to 70.
How do I pick my claiming age?
Scroll the claim age picker or tap any row in the claim table. The selected age is highlighted and shows your monthly and annual benefit. The four KPI tiles always show At 62, At FRA, At 70, and your currently selected age.

529 Plan

What is a 529 plan?
A 529 is a tax-advantaged college savings plan. Earnings grow tax-free and withdrawals are tax-free for qualified education expenses. There is no annual contribution limit, though total balances may have state-level caps. Individual state tax rules vary.
How does the 529 planner work?
Enter the beneficiary's age, expected college start age, years of school, current balance, annual contribution, expected return, and projected annual cost. The planner calculates whether you'll fully fund school costs and shows a year-by-year projection table through each school year.
What does "Monthly Needed" mean?
If your projected balance falls short of total school costs, the planner shows how much you'd need to contribute per month starting today to fully fund it by the time school starts.

530A โ€” Trump Account

What is a 530A account?
Section 530A is a new tax-advantaged account type created by H.R. 1 (effective July 4, 2026). Funds are invested in low-cost US equity index funds only, contributions are capped at $5,000/year, and the account is locked until the child turns 18. After 18, standard IRA rules apply.
What is the $1,000 federal seed deposit?
The US government deposits a one-time $1,000 for children born between 2025 and 2028 when a 530A account is opened. Toggle Include $1,000 Federal Seed in the planner to include it in projections. Eligibility and timing are subject to change.
What are the investment restrictions?
Investments are restricted to low-cost US equity index funds (e.g. S&P 500 ETFs with โ‰ค0.10% expense ratio and โ‰ฅ90% US stocks). No withdrawals before age 18. After 18, ordinary income tax plus a 10% penalty applies before age 59ยฝ โ€” with exceptions for education, first home ($10k), and childbirth ($5k).
Is this planner tax advice?
No. Section 530A is a new account type and rules may change. The planner is based on 2026 rules as written in H.R. 1. Verify with a qualified tax professional before making financial decisions.

KPI Dashboard

What does the KPI tab show?
The KPI tab shows key metrics from every planner in one place: surplus rate and take-home (Budget), net worth and debt ratio (Net Worth), retirement balance and monthly income (401k), IRA balance and status (IRA), benefit at each claiming age (Social Security), coverage and surplus (529), and balance at 18 and contributions (530A).
Can I collapse or reorder KPI sections?
Yes. Each section has a Show/Hide button, and there's a Show All / Hide All toggle at the top. Tap the reorder button (โ†‘โ†“) to drag sections into any order โ€” this follows your planner order on the Planners tab.

Appearance & Display

Can I use dark mode?
Yes. Go to Settings โ†’ Appearance and choose Light, Dark, or Automatic (follows your device setting).
What is Hide Values?
Under Settings โ†’ Display โ†’ Hide Values, toggle this on to replace all dollar amounts with โ€ขโ€ขโ€ข across the app. Useful when viewing your finances in a public place. On/Off Track status is still shown.
What is Show Current Balance?
Under Settings โ†’ Display โ†’ Show Current Balance, toggle this on to show your current 401(k) and IRA balance on planner cards and the KPI tab instead of the projected retirement-age balance.
